How Long, Oh Lord, How Long?
We often expect life to move at a steady pace, filled with progress and comfort. Yet, many of us find ourselves waiting—sometimes for days, sometimes for years—asking the question, “How long, O Lord?”
Waiting is uncomfortable, especially in a world that values quick solutions and instant gratification. Whether it’s waiting at the DMV or enduring seasons of deep personal pain, these moments try our patience and test our faith.
But waiting is not new. It was the cry of King David in Psalm 13, and it echoes through our hearts today:
“How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?”
David was honest with God, and that’s where we need to start too.
Here are a few takeaways from Psalm 13 about waiting on God:
1. God invites our raw honesty.
“How long must I take counsel in my soul and have sorrow in my heart all the day? How long shall my enemy be exalted over me?” (Psalm 13:2 ESV)
David felt forgotten and abandoned by God. Yet, this honesty was sacred. God didn’t interrupt David’s lament; He let him pour out his heart.
Do we give ourselves permission to be this honest with God? He can handle our pain, frustration, and doubts. In fact, He welcomes it. Being real with God is the first step to deepening our relationship with Him.
2. Waiting shapes and deepens our trust.
“Consider and answer me, O Lord my God; light up my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death.” (Psalm 13:3 ESV)
David’s prayer shifts from lament to petition. He reaches out to God for help, knowing that the act of trusting God in the waiting process is transformative. Though we may not always receive immediate answers, waiting allows us to develop a faith that isn’t shaken by circumstances.
Are we willing to trust God when we can’t see the outcome?
3. We can choose to declare God’s faithfulness.
“But I trust in your steadfast love; my heart shall rejoice in your salvation.” (Psalm 13:5 ESV)
David doesn’t receive his answer in this psalm. Yet, after bringing his pain to God, he affirms God’s faithfulness and salvation. His hope is not dependent on his circumstances changing but on the steadfast love he has experienced in the past.
Have you seen God’s faithfulness before? Let those moments be the foundation for your hope today.
4. God is closest when our hearts ache.
David’s experience resonates with many of God’s people across time. Waiting seasons can feel lonely and overwhelming, but we are not alone. As Joni Eareckson Tada, who has endured decades of hardship, reminds us: “Heartache forces us to embrace God out of desperate, urgent need. God is never closer than when your heart is aching.”
The moments when life is hardest are often when God is doing His most profound work in us. He is present, even when it feels like He’s far away.
5. The cross is proof that God hasn’t forgotten us.
If you ever feel abandoned in your waiting, remember this: God sent His Son to die for you. He has already proven His deep love by sacrificing what was most precious to Him.
Romans 8:32 says, “He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?”
God may not provide the answers we want when we want them, but He has not left us. He is present in every tear, every prayer, and every moment of waiting.
Waiting on God isn’t easy, but it deepens our trust and prepares us to receive His answers with gratitude. So, if you find yourself in a season of asking, “How long, O Lord?” know that you are not forgotten. He is near, and He is faithful.
